After I completed my study abroad and came back to Hong Kong, my destiny was changed on Valentine’s Day in 1998. On my way home, the car veered off the road and smashed into the guardrail. I was thrown out of the car and severely injured to faint. Since my head was bumped and collar bones were broken, the doctor confirmed that my cervical nerves were severely injured and I would be handicapped and sit in the wheelchair for the rest of my life. At that time, I could not even lift my arms, but I still comforted myself that if this irreversible fact could not be changed, I would rather face up to the reality and try my best to get rid of such painful feelings. As my therapist told me that I could regard it as a new start, I began to practice writing and painting again, and learn how to live an independent life. I did not want to lose my free and unrestrained life even though I was sitting in the wheelchair, and successfully obtained my driving license. With the strong support from my family, friends and others, my dreams were all fulfilled one by one. A decade ago, I strongly felt the passion and the necessity to establish my own design company. Meanwhile, I was also involved in undertaking voluntary design works for some charity organizations.
In recent years, I continue equipping myself. I served in the Direction Association for the Handicapped and Women’s Commission and actively participated in advocating work regarding barrier-free environment. Fond of travelling, I have visited many foreign countries. I kept telling myself, “Although my limbs are not so functional as before, I can still create unlimited possibilities. I have determined to do and try what I want. When we neglect what we lose and cherish what we have, we can all get what we want, and live a better life.”
Now, I serve as the chairperson of Direction Association for the Handicapped, and the Social Enterprise as well as the AQ Training Instructor. From 2013 till now, I have been appointed as a member of Women’s Commission of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region; in 2016, I was appointed as a member of Partnership Fund for the Disadvantaged Advisory Committee.
In addition, I have acted in the first season story “The Third Choice” in 2010 and the third season story “A Doomed Couple” in 2012 of A Wall-less World Series adapted according to UN Convention of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities shot by RTHK. I participated in the design of the Logo for Talent-wise Employment Charter and in the Midsummer Night for the Talent and Wise and Documentary Series. In 2016, I was selected as the Rehab Life Driver and the Regeneration Society Top Ten Regeneration Warriors.
