Tommy Lau:Welcome our Brilliant Future

One day in 2006, I drank a little in a dinner with my colleagues in Shenzhen, and a colleague decided to drive me home. Unfortunately, a traffic accident happened and caused my disability. On that night, I was transferred to a hospital in Hong Kong by the ambulance. After the doctor examined my body and performed an operation, my limbs still could not move. Finally, the doctor confirmed that my cervical spine nerves were damaged. When I learned more about my disease, I realized it was incurable. From that time on, my most painful days began. When I was in hospital, I could not accept the fate at all. Since my body could not move, I had to lie in bed for the whole day, and the nurse even needed to help me eat and relieve myself. From morning till night, I was bored to death, and radio was everything for me.

After one month, I was then transferred to another hospital for further rehabilitation, and the doctor just told me that I would be handicapped in the rest of my life. However, my feelings were not so hurt, and perhaps I had already accepted the reality. At that moment, I even comforted myself that traditional Chinese medicine therapy perhaps could cure me. Since the science and technology was advanced, I would be recovered sooner or later. Eventually, I decided to go to northern China for treatment. In 3 years, my footprints spread all around China, but little progress was made. Therefore, I came back to Hong Kong again.

Afterwards, as introduced by my friends, I joined Direction Association for the Handicapped, and I also completed a very important thing in my life during the National Day. Namely, I proposed to my wife in front of a thousand people, and she said yes. With beautiful fireworks, that night was indeed unforgettable for me. Now, I will grow together with my son. Thank God! Gradually, I also worked for different teams in DA, including Individual Visit and Caring Team, Life Education Team and Hobby Team. Before I joined the band, it was rare for me to go outside. As I became a member of the band, I would frequently rehearse in the center. Since I need to go to the center by bus, I had much more opportunities to meet and communicate with others, which encouraged me to face the society confidently. Nowadays, I frequently perform together with the band. We are getting more and more encouragement and recognition from the society, and reputation is gradually rising. Actually, many organizations are inviting us……

In addition, I will go to different schools and share my experience and story with different students, enabling them to understand my life experience and the daily life of the handicapped. Now, I live my life to  the fullest, and my life value has also changed after the accident. Although I am unfortunately handicapped, I still can contribute to the society and welcome a brilliant future.
